Small Business Tips: Building Strong Client Relationships

The internet is filled with tips on what a small business can do to build strong client relationships, but are some more important than others? Here’s our list of the Top 5.

Communicate!

Our first tip is to make sure that you focus on having exceptional communication. This means that the communication with your current and potential clients needs to be timely and efficient. It doesn’t mean that you need to let business encroach on your personal time or have a negative effect on the productivity of the company, but being responsive to clients shows that their business is important to you. It could be as simple as acknowledging a text message or replying their their post on social media, letting them know when you’ll be available.

Keep a Good Attitude

Maintaining a positive attitude is a great way to keep customers happy. You have a huge number of responsibilities if you are a professional trying to run a business. It is important to remember that when you are overwhelmed or stressed out with the business, you still want to be positive with all of your clients. Give the same energy and confidence you want all of your clients to have for the work you are going to be doing for them. This is the best way to grow your business.

Make Things A Little Personal

The third tip for client relationships is to acknowledge the client as an individual. Treating clients like a friend instead of a paycheck will help you build long term relationships. We all want to feel important. Of course, how personal the connection is will depend on the industry, the personality of the client, and the type of client that you have. Start with small talk. One way to do this is if you know that your client is a parent, then you can ask them about how their kids are doing in school or with their sports team.

Share Your Knowledge

Clients really appreciate it when you share knowledge you have about your industry with them. When the potential clients do not understand what is going on, then they might feel insecure about the whole process. They are going to feel disconnected when the project is in the process of developing and may lose interest all together. One of the best ways to build some trust and confidence with the client is to share the information that you have. Explain your process, why you are doing it, and how you made the decision to do it that way.

Be Open

Our last tip is to be open with the clients. This is because in order to have a good relationship with your clients, they are going to need to be able to trust you as an expert in your field, providing great work. You’ll want to give them your opinions about projects as a professional. You will also need to be able to tell them what will best work for the project at hand. You should be able to answer all of their questions honestly, no matter what the answer may be. Address the problem, then work on the solution.
